Restore, Storage and Back-up
5 Hard-Hitting Reasons Why it’s Smart to backup Data Online
Ask anyone what they felt like when their data went “kaput”, you’d better carry tissue papers with you. Losing data is traumatic, no matter how vague that seems to be. Most people are conscientious about backing-up their data elsewhere but that’s funny, because you are taking even larger risks by NOT backing up. Here are a few reasons why you must go for an online back-up:
- The Grass is always Green on the Other Side: You’ve heard that saying before, haven’t you? Well, for once it makes sense. A trustworthy online backup service provider would always have greener grass than you would have simply because these “ managed Services” ensure that your data remains in vault-like servers — secure and managed — such that your data is never lost, ever. All of this data is help within servers and is also “encrypted” using modern methods like 128-bit AES transmission; have fully redundant offsite facilities; flawless server storage facilities and much more.
- Did “Trying” ever kill you? : Most of the online backup services have a free trial that you could try and use. Well some of them do ask for your credit card to be filed on their records and some of them don’t. You could take a judgment call here and go with whatever you are comfortable with. The online service provider I use ( Carbonite) doesn’t ask for any credit card details and allowed me to use the trail version for 15 days. Since the service is something my pet dog would understand and use, I really didn’t need those 15 days to make a decision (oh, by the way, I am a data loss victim and hence my decision would have been quick because of that).
- Laptops and Mobile phones make your data more susceptible: According to IDC, thousands of laptops are stolen — 300,000 of them — and less than 2% of them are ever retrieved. Each of those laptops had data in them. Good lord, can you imagine the havoc? As more and more users move over to mobile devices — like laptops, i phones, smart phones and PDAs, the more the chances that you might end up losing data.
- Are you playing the Russian roulette? : About 15-20% of laptops are slated to fail each year and less than 8% of laptop/PC users backup data. Most users are reactionary, in the sense that only when they lose data would they begin to scuttle and scramble for a solution — which isn’t a very smart thing to do, now that the data is lost forever.
- Back up and restore simply makes sense: In the case of companies, backup and recovery happen to be a part of their standard regulatory mandates. Most of the popular and mandatory regulations like the SOA (Sarbanes-Oxley Act), Gramm-Leach Bliley Act (GLBA) make it mandatory for data protection and security. There is a reason for it and that is something both the individuals and companies have to espouse.
